How To: Re wax your Barbour Jacket

Barbour Jacket A Barbour jacket is an investment, and is sure to be used on those wet, rainy and mucky days. We’ve put together our top tips on re waxing how to re wax your Barbour jacket, to help you make them shine again!

The best way to care for your Barbour is to re-wax as required –  ideally you should do this in the dry season, or when you are not using it as much.

Get yourself some space to work in, the kitchen table, (make sure you ask permission!) utility or garage. Re-waxing can be a slightly messy process and in many respects it is a bit like polishing your shoes.

1. If there is any loose dirt on the jacket, make sure you thoroughly brush the jacket down first. Make sure you use a soft cloth, nothing too abrasive. You can use cold water and a sponge if needed. (Do not use hot water and never put your Barbour Jacket in the washing machine – this will permanently damage it!)

2. While you carry out step one, you can prepare your wax. Get your tin of Barbour Wax Thornproof dressing. Place the tin of dressing into a saucepan of hot water up to about ¾ the height of the tin. This should take about 20 minutes. Once the dressing becomes gooey and clear remove pan from the heat, but keep the tin in the pan to keep the consistency of the wax. You can always reheat it if you are interrupted.

3. Get an old lint free cloth or sponge, dip into wax and apply lightly, starting with inside of the arms, shoulders, around pockets where most of the wear will have taken place. The trick is to apply lightly and go over again if it needs more, rather than over applying. If you over apply, the wax is likely to clump and harden. Having completed the high wear areas of your jacket then finish off the other sections of the jacket.

4. If you find you have over applied the wax in certain areas, soften with a hair dryer on a warm (not hot) setting and using your cloth, blend into the jacket again.

5. Depending on the time of year leave the jacket in a cool/dry area to dry off before use and for an extra smooth finish, go over your jacket with a hair dryer…but if all that seems like far too much work for you bring it to us at Mullaney Brothers and we will re wax your Barbour Jacket for you!
