Happy National ‘Stay Out Of The Sun’ Day!

As Irish people we get very excited about sunshine, it’s a rarity to have such great weather and lovely heat.

But before we get too excited we need to be reminded of the dangers of the sun and being in it without protection.

We highly recommend covering up as much as possible and wear high SPF anywhere that your skin is exposed to the Sun.

A sun hat is also extremely important to protect your scalp from the hot rays. So before you go running out to the beach or sunbathing in your garden, here a few things you should be aware of…

Drink lots of water!

The sun and heat can make you very dehydrated. Keep sipping that water throughout the day,especially if you are in it for the day.

Wear Sunscreen!

Follow the guideline of “one ounce, enough to fill a shot glass”, when it comes to how much sunscreen you should use.
Apply the sunscreen to dry skin 15 minutes BEFORE going outdoors.
Re-apply sunscreen approximately every two hours or after swimming or sweating heavily according to the directions on the bottle.

Cover up!

We recommend:

Wearing a wide-brimmed sunhat that covers and protects your face and shoulders.
Wearing long cover ups that are light enough to keep you cool in the heat, but long enough to cover arms and legs.

Hide in the shade

Step into the shade as much as possible to avoid getting sun burnt.

Sligo’s Vivid Cloths Exhibition

The Vivid Cloths Exhibition started on June 5th of this year in Teach Bán Gallery, Drumcliffe, Sligo, and runs until June 26th.

You still have a few more days to see this great event.

This Textile Collective’s exhibition “Vivid Cloths”, is an innovative mixed media exhibition celebrating in part the 150th anniversary of the birth of W.B. Yeats.

During the exhibition, visitors to Teach Bán Gallery are invited to bring their creative flair to “The Cloths of Heaven” through the medium of stitching, weaving, painting, drawing, collage and more. Each visitor focuses on their interpretation of Yeats poem of the same name, creating a community crafted cloth that will be displayed in a public gallery for all to view and appreciate.

This exhibition will also feature on Irish TV’s programme Sligo Matters which will be aired in the coming months and is part of the events on this years Lily Lolly Craftfest programme.

Protect Yourself Against the Elements

Rain and wind – two constant companions in the outdoors of Ireland. If you’re keen on getting out this summer, make sure that you’re protected against the elements

Protect your Face!

Over the summer, everyone knows to use some sun protection to prevent against sunburn and those nasty UV rays. But you still need protection from the sun on overcast days also. We recommend taking a small bottle of sun cream on hikes and bike rides, and apply as necessary. UV glasses will protect your eyes and remove glare from your vision on days with changeable weather.

It’s not just the sun your face needs protecting from though – wind can cause significant damage as well – leading to dry, chapped or burned skin. For keen hikers and walkers using clothing over exposed areas of your face will help prevent damage.

If you’re going to be exploring in hotter climes, do make sure that you take plenty of water during the day, and have a hat to prevent against sunstroke.

Upper Body Protection

The elements can also damage skin on the upper body while walking and especially cycling. Again, we recommend appropriate sun cream at all times, and wearing a breathable material that allows moisture out, but not in, keeping you cool and dry.
